off-season with jessie diggins

Hi nuuniverse! I’m Jessie: a Nuun athlete, a clean sport advocate, and a professional cross country skier. In other words, I sweat, wear spandex and ski uphill for a living! My year looks something like this: starting May 1st, I begin training.

Originally from Minnesota, I now train with my club team out of Stratton, Vermont, and that’s where I live when I’m not at US Ski Team camps in Oregon, Alaska, New Zealand and Utah. I usually train twice a day, 6 days a week, and although I love it…it’s brutally hard. We train with a mix of roller skiing, running, weight lifting and other cross...

Jessie Diggins at the World Championships

I never used to think hydration was as important in the winter, because when you’re colder you’re not as thirsty all the time. In fact, staying properly hydrated while competing in winter sports can make or break your performance, because you’re still sweating and your body needs to replenish it’s stores! This year I’ve made it a goal to up my water game and use Nuun to help improve my performance as I compete on the World Cup in Cross Country skiing. This is my fifth year on the US Ski Team and the World Cup circuit, and I absolutely love my job. I’m always looking for ways to improve and keep my body healthy and ready to race fast, and this year I won my first individual distance World Cup and had the chance to anchor our relay team to two medals, so I’m very happy with how it’s been working out!

thermoregulation & core temperature in winter

We are now fully emerged into winter (one of my favorite seasons), and about 3/4 of the country is now dealing with cooler air, wind, snow and ice, so what does that mean for your hydration? Year after year, I hear from several athletes on how they change their hydration strategy to deal with the change in environmental conditions. Now, I won’t say that’s a bad idea in any way, because it is important to make the necessary adjustments for all non-controllable factors while exercising. But, I hear over and over again how some athletes feel like they don’t need to hydrate or drink as much. That couldn’t be more wrong.

winter hydration is more than water

Staying hydrated means giving your body the right levels of both water and electrolytes. And while you may put careful thought into your fuel for winter training, not everyone remembers to think about hydration. When it's cold outside, you don’t have the normal triggers associated with thirst. Your body is working hard, but sweat evaporates quickly in the cold, dry air so you don’t have that sweaty workout feeling to drive you to your Nuun.

5 Tips for Winter Hydration

Winter is coming. No, we aren’t talking about the Game of Thrones return. We are talking about the need to focus on hydration during these upcoming cooler months. (It’s more our specialty.)

As fall quickly becomes winter, we often hear people say that they don’t feel thirsty or don’t have the desire to drink as much water when temperatures drop. There’s a reason for feeling this way, as cold air triggers the body to reserve heat and maintain fluid balance. When cold, your body decreases blood flow to your extremities and increases blood flow to your core. Your brain reads this core blood...

Hydrate - The Polar Vortex is draining your electrolytes!

By Vishal Patel It’s not often we talk about the NFL on our blog, but just like every other athlete, football players need to hydrate too, especially in the winter. A couple weeks ago, much of the country got hit with a cold front that was tagged as the “Polar Vortex.” With temperatures reaching as low as 20 to 30 below, not only was the air cold and dry, humidity was up as well.  All of these factors increase the risk for dehydration. Something very interesting I noticed while watching the San Francisco 49ers battle the Green Bay Packers that Sunday was how...

Winter Hydration Tips for Athletes

By Vishal Patel, Nuun Hydration Nutritionist

The New York City Marathon is usually a nice indication that fall is coming to an end, but as we shift gears into winter with athletes beginning their off-season programs it's safe to say that many don’t stop training!

Should I hydrate less in the winter?

During the winter we hear a lot from our consumers that they tend to not drink as much water or Nuun as compared to summer months, and generally it’s due to the perception that we do not sweat as much when it’s colder. That theory may be true at times, however, many...
