The Role of Electrolytes

Electrolytes provide a number of biological benefits, and water absorption is at the top of the list! When combined with water, electrolytes go to work making sure that the fluid leaving our water bottle actually gets absorbed into our system (rather than flushing right through us), ensuring all of the hydration benefits we know and love about water!

The Role Electrolytes Play in Our Body

We all understand that a balanced health regimen includes a solid hydration plan. The benefits of hydration range from glowing skin to essential organ functionality, but did you know that water alone does not provide absolute optimal hydration? While H20 consumption is vital to the inner workings of the human body, drinking tons of water every day is actually not the best way to ensure that the H20 is being absorbed and utilized in the best ways possible.

Enter: electrolytes. (Welcome to the party electrolytes!) **happy dance**

Now that we’ve officially got this hydration party started, there are so many reasons to celebrate electrolytes for our everyday health.

Fluid balance

When we sweat, we lose electrolytes. One of the more obvious of those electrolytes is sodium (hence the salty taste to our sweat). Sodium in the most important electrolyte to monitor when exercising, as we lose more of it than any other electrolyte. Low blood sodium can lead to a decrease in overall performance, and affect our physiological functions (such as basic nervous system and muscle functionality). Replenishing with Nuun Sport after a workout restores our sodium levels and keeps our bodies happy and healthy!

Cramping

For those of you who have ever had the unfortunate experience of waking up in the middle of the night with violent muscle cramping…meet your new best friends: water & electrolytes! Potassium, magnesium & calcium (all electrolytes) contribute to the transmission of nerve impulses and control of muscle contractions. Ensuring that your electrolyte levels are in balance and that you’re well hydrated can prevent some painful backlash later down the road.

Muscle contractions

Muscle contractions (small and large) are required to keep us moving and functioning as healthy human beings. Keep in mind, the heart is a muscle that is constantly contracting, pumping blood throughout the rest of our body. Electrolytes are essential to muscle contractions, and thus, overall cardiac health. Calcium plays a huge role in both the maintenance of muscle functionality and overall bone health.

Relaxation

Ahhhh…relaxation. With all of the stress we put on our bodies, it’s important to remember that our muscles also need to relax and recover. While calcium aids in the healthy activation and exertion of our muscles, magnesium counterbalances by aiding in the relaxation state of our muscles. Heck yea! #powerteam!

Nuun Sport tablets contain a proprietary blend of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium bicarbonate. This optimal electrolyte profile keeps your healthy and performing your best at whatever keeps you muuving!
