Nuun Science for Kids
We're sharing some of our favorite science experiments from elementary school, but with a Nuun twist. Whether you homeschool your children or are just looking for a little Saturday fun, here's yet another reason to raid your Nuun stash. The experiments below are fun for the whole family: short and sweet, and an excellent way to spark a kid's curiosity. Added bonus: everything you'll need can be found in your kitchen cupboard.
- Paint with Nuun
What you'll need:
- Washable paint (in case it gets on your clothes)
- Water
- Empty Nuun tubes
- Nuun tabs (crushed or broken)
- Poster board or large sheet of paper
This one can get a bit messy, so we recommend taking it outside. Add paint (slightly watered down) to an empty Nuun tube and pour in crushed Nuun. Cap it, give it a shake, set it upside down, and get ready for the pop!
This is a great opportunity to experiment with ratios. More paint? More water? More Nuun? You'll get a different outcome each time!
- Nuun "lava" lamp
What you'll need:
- Jar with a lid (in case your kids want to shake the jar)
- Cooking oil
- Water
- Food coloring
- Nuun tabs (broken)
Fill the jar with oil until it is 2/3 full. Add a few drops of food coloring to a glass of water, then pour into the mason jar. Add a piece of Nuun, and watch the bubble magic!
- Bubbles and balloons
What you'll need:
- A bottle
- A balloon
- Water
- Nuun tabs (broken)
Make sure you pre-stretch the balloon and attach it to the bottle lid. Fill your bottle with water (all the way to the top) and drop in the Nuun tab pieces, then close the bottle. (if you're using a disposable bottle, place the balloon over the opening.)
- Hot vs. Cold
What you'll need:
- 3 clear glasses/cups (to watch the reaction)
- Water of different temperatures (hot, warm, and cold)
- 3 Nuun tablets
- Stopwatch to time the reaction
Fill each glass with a different temperature of water (we used hot water out of the faucet, room temperature water, and cold water with ice). Drop a tab in each glass, and start the stopwatch. As your child will see, the hotter the water, the faster the reaction! You can add the tablets one at a time (timing each reaction), or all-together.
- Crushed vs. Broken
What you'll need:
- 3 clear glasses (to see the reaction)
- 3 Nuun tabs
- Mortar and pestle (or something to crush the tab)
- Stopwatch to time the reaction
Break one tablet into four pieces, and crush the second tablet. Leave the third tablet whole. Then fill each glass with room temperature water, and drop in the tablets! Start the stopwatch to time which tablet dissolves faster. You can add the tablets one at a time (timing each reaction), or all-together.
